Iran opens World Taekwondo Team C’ships with victory

TEHRAN, Dec. 12 (MNA) – National Iranian taekwondo squad was victorious in the face of Russian rivals in their first encounter at 2016 WTF World Taekwondo Team Championships in Baku.

Attended by seven top national taekwondo teams, the sportive event kicked off today in Sarhadchi Olympic Sports Complex of the Azerbaijani capital.

The Iranian outfit, which has been seeded in Group A against Russia, South Korea and Turkey, comprises Farzan Ashourzadeh, Mahdi Jalali, Siavash Fakhraei and Saeid Rajabi.

In their opening showdown, Iranian taekwondo fighters faced the Russian team and pulled out a 16-15 victory.

Accordingly, Iranian taekwondo practitioners are scheduled to take on South Korean contestants in their second encounter.

World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) has invited 2015 title winner Iran, South Korea, Russia, Mexico, the US, Côte d’Ivoire, Australia and Azerbaijan Republic (with host country quota) to the Team Championships which is being competed in Baku on December 12-13.
